Fungal Foray – 21st September 2024

On 21st September we are hosting a Fungal Foray!

This fungal foray is a fantastic opportunity for nature lovers, amateur mycologists, and anyone interested in learning more about fungi. Our group leader, from the Borders Fungus Group, will guide you on a leisurely walk through the beautiful ancient woodlands and pastures of Chillingham, introducing you to the fascinating world of fungi and their importance in our environment.

Chillingham Park provides a rich environment for supporting a huge range of different fungi. The pastures have not been ploughed for at least 240 years and have never been treated with artificial fertiliser. The trees and woodlands are not managed commercially, nor “tidied up” for landscape or safety reasons. They are allowed to decline in situ and fallen timber is allowed to rot where it falls. All in all, the perfect habitat for a great range of different fungi.

Please note: This foray is not focused on identifying edible fungi. Instead, we will explore the diversity and ecological significance of various fungi species.

The walk covers difficult and uneven terrain, so please be prepared for a moderately challenging hike.
